A damp peat note rides the Zaan as De Kat’s sails creak above sacks of pigment—yes, color is still ground here as it was in 1782. At Zaanse Schans, the wind-powered sawmills De Gekroonde Poelenburg and Het Jonge Schaap show how Dutch ship timber was cut plank by plank on a steady westerly. Down the road, Volendam lines up wooden façades along the havendijk where eel smokers still work, and Marken, linked to the mainland only since 1957 by a 1.6 km causeway, keeps houses on stilts to face the former Zuiderzee’s floods.
From there the day runs smoothly: your private driver in Amsterdam meets you at the hotel with a Mercedes at your disposal and handles each hop while you sample 36‑month Gouda at Catharina Hoeve and watch clogs shaped at Kooijman’s workshop. It’s about 25 minutes to Zaanse Schans (17 km), a further 30 minutes to Volendam, then 10 minutes to Marken. The driver waits during visits, tweaks stops to suit the weather, books a table at De Dijk or arranges the Volendam–Marken ferry, and brings you back comfortably by late afternoon.
