Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Marken

At Zaanse Schans, the wind-powered sawmills De Gekroonde Poelenburg and Het Jonge Schaap show how Dutch ship timber was cut plank by plank on a steady westerly. Down the road, Volendam lines up wooden façades along the havendijk where eel smokers still work, and Marken, linked to the mainland only since 1957 by a 1.6 km causeway, keeps houses on stilts to face the former Zuiderzee’s floods.
