Savennières and the Layon slopes

Before the slopes rise, the Loire drifts wide and slow; then the ground tilts toward Savennières and the storied Coulée de Serrant, where monks shaped Chenin from the 12th century onward. On schist and flinty phtanite, dry wines take on saline bite, while south along the Layon, autumn mists drive noble rot toward Quarts-de-Chaume, the Loire’s sole grand cru. It’s 15 km from Angers to Savennières, and barely 10 minutes from the Romanesque church to the vineyard gate. One grape, two climates, two harvest logics.

The plan is clear yet flexible: hotel pick-up in Angers, a Mercedes at your disposal, and pre-booked tastings where growers talk through vintages while your driver handles roads and timing. With your private chauffeur in Angers setting the pace, we slip to Rochefort-sur-Loire and on to Chaume in about 25 minutes. You taste, stroll the rows, and pause for lunch in Le Thoureil or Bouchemaine by the river; in the afternoon we head to Beaulieu-sur-Layon to compare selective picking and barrel élevage.
