Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon

From Athens’ traffic to the soft break of the Saronic Gulf, the mood flips. The Athenian Riviera unfurls: Paleo Faliro, Glyfada, then Vouliagmeni with its year‑round 22–29 °C thermal lake. Seventy kilometers from downtown, the Doric Temple of Poseidon (c. 444–440 BC) crowns Cape Sounion, 60 meters above the Aegean. Ancient crews used it as a sea mark; today, from the stylobate, you can pick out Makronissos and Kea. At dusk the marble turns coppery, and it makes sense that Byron carved his name here in 1810.

Here’s how it runs: your dedicated driver collects you at the hotel, vehicle on standby for roughly 4–5 hours. We follow the coast south, pausing for coffee at Voula’s marina or, in summer, a swim at Vouliagmeni’s Astir Beach. Near the cape, timing is handled so you reach the gate 30–40 minutes before sunset; you explore while the driver waits.
