Pont du Gard and Uzès

Stone against water, the contrast is sharp: the Pont du Gard rises 48 m high in three tiers, once channeling spring water from Uzès to Nîmes along a 50 km aqueduct built in the 1st century. Just 30 minutes from Avignon, you can still see chisel marks on limestone blocks, trace the former canal atop the bridge, and follow the left-bank trail to grasp the scale of Roman engineering. A little farther, Uzès unfolds its ducal landmarks—the Bermonde tower, Saint-Théodorit Cathedral with its Romanesque Fenestrelle—and the arcaded, tree-shaded Place aux Herbes with busy markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
