A bend past Guello, the gradient bites and the lake splits like a compass: Lecco to the left, Como to the right. We climb to Magreglio at 754 m, where the small square leads to the Madonna del Ghisallo chapel, patron saint of cyclists since 1949. Beneath jerseys signed by Coppi and Merckx, the bell still rings on Il Lombardia race days. Next door, the museum maps the old mule track of the Vallassina and the historic relays between Erba and Asso, putting names and dates to the climbs you’ve only seen on TV.
From there, it’s effortless travel: your driver collects you at your Bellagio hotel in a comfortable Mercedes with chilled water, and stays on hand. While you visit the chapel and museum (45–60 min), he handles the switchbacks, then drops down via Civenna into the Vallassina for coffee in Asso or a focaccia stop in Canzo. With a private chauffeur around Bellagio, you can add the 10 km detour to the Piano Rancio viewpoint or pause at San Giovanni church, without watching the clock or hunting for parking.

Skip Il Lombardia race weekends (October) for a quieter visit; for crisp shots of both lake arms, aim for 9:30 at the Civenna viewpoint when light hits Lecco head-on and skims Como.
