Guincho and Cabo da Roca

Just past Cascais the road opens wide and the tang of seaweed rides each gust; dunes roll to your right at Guincho while white water hammers the reef ahead. We pull in by the 1642 São Jorge de Oitavos fort, step five minutes along raised boardwalks that shield the marram grass, and feel the Sintra hills whip up the swell; windsurfers carve the break where a royal route once crossed these sands. The corniche then climbs to Cabo da Roca, 140 meters above the Atlantic, its 1772 lighthouse throwing a steady white flash.

With a private chauffeur in Cascais, distances make sense: 15 minutes to Guincho, another 20 to the cape; in between, taste rissóis and goose barnacles while parking and traffic are taken care of.
