Plaine Morte glacier

Snow squeaks under your boots and the wind whistles past the red poles: the Plaine Morte is a high, flat glacier at 2,957 m tucked between the Wildstrubel and Rohrbachstein. From the Violettes gondola or the Crans-Montana funicular, both a short 10-minute drive from central Crans, your horizon stretches from Mont Blanc to the Weisshorn and, on a clear line, the Matterhorn. The glacier has its own calendar: spring skiing on groomed runs until late May when conditions allow, or a roped walk with a local guide across deceptively level but crevassed terrain.

Your outing begins at your hotel in Crans-Montana, with a quiet Mercedes, heated seats in winter, and space for skis and boots. Your dedicated driver times the drop-off at Les Violettes (about 5 km) or the funicular, adapts to the weather window, and waits while you ride up. Quick espresso at Bar Zerodix or a crampon pick-up at Monnet Sports if needed, then straight to the gondola. On the way back, a flexible stop at the Buvette des Violettes for an apricot tart, while your driver keeps an eye on passes and the clock.
