Briny air rises from the oyster beds of Mali Ston Bay as early light catches Ston’s crenelated walls, a 5.5 km defensive line completed in the 15th century to guard the salt pans. Fifty-five kilometers northwest of Dubrovnik, the Pelješac peninsula unfolds steep schist and limestone slopes where plavac mali grips Dingač and Postup, some vineyards pitched at over 45%. Tastings reveal sun-built structure, the maestral’s cooling hand, and why growers speak of a tight terroir–climate–sea triangle.
Your day moves at an easy clip: hotel pick-up in a Mercedes, then the car remains at your disposal for scenic pauses and unplanned turns. With a private driver from Dubrovnik, Pelješac is effortless—you explore Ston’s walls, ride out to a grower’s pontoon to shuck native European flats (Ostrea edulis), then trace the coast to cellars in Potomje and Trstenik. Distances are short: 10 minutes Ston to Mali Ston, about 25 to Dingač via the Potomje tunnel, and a similar run back along the viewpoint-studded road above Žuljana.
