Linderhof and Ettal Abbey

The stucco dates to 1878 at Linderhof, the only palace King Ludwig II actually completed, tucked at 980 m in the Graswang valley, 28 km from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Before that, Ettal comes first: a Benedictine foundation from 1330 by Emperor Ludwig IV, a baroque dome with frescoes by Johann Jakob Zeiller, and a monastic distillery scented with angelica. Then it’s on to French-style terraces, the Moorish Kiosk acquired at the 1867 Exposition Universelle, and the Venus Grotto, an engineering feat heated by electric light as early as 1878.
