The sweet, grassy scent of apple blossom and the low hum of beehives set the tone along the Elbe’s left bank, where the Altes Land stretches across some 10,000 hectares of orchards from Cranz to Stade. Half-timbered farmhouses in Jork—some from the 1700s—speak of fruit-fuelled Hanseatic wealth. Come April, cherry trees stripe the Lühe with white; by September, crates of Holsteiner Cox and Elstar line farm gates. It’s a 35–45 minute run from Hamburg, with cycle paths skirting windmills and floodgates that reveal how the dike system works.
Collected from your Hamburg hotel, your driver keeps a Mercedes E- or V-Class at your disposal for around four hours—flexible stops, your pace. Many start at Lühe-Anleger for big-ship views, then head to Jork for the half-timbered town hall and Apfelkuchen at a Hofcafé in Borstel. While traffic and parking are taken care of, you tour the Altes Land Museum or meet a grower at Herzapfelhof, about 8 km away, before returning via the Elbchaussee. In the Altes Land, your private chauffeur fine-tunes tastings and timings to the blossom or harvest.
