Once you leave the bustle of Keukenhof’s entrances, the backroads between Lisse and Hillegom drop into quiet polder country. From April to early May, the Bollenstreek unfolds in crisp checkerboards: early tulips near the Hillegommerbeek, hyacinths around De Zilk, and more narcissi to the north. Rows are planted with the prevailing winds in mind to protect stems—a clue you’ll spot in the windbreaks. Along the Ringvaart you still see former peat plots; their slight raised edges give just enough height for commanding color lines.

Here’s how it works: pick-up from your Amsterdam or Haarlem hotel, then a 4-hour vehicle at your disposal toward Lisse. Your private driver in Lisse knows permitted farm access points, times photo stops for the best angles, and steers clear of N208 bottlenecks. You shoot, try a warm stroopwafel by Heereweg, and step into a permitted field near Annemieke’s Pluktuin while the car moves ahead to the next patch. We return via the Ringvaart past the Buitenkaag windmills, or detour through Noordwijkerhout depending on that day’s bloom map.
