Île de Ré, villages and the Baleines lighthouse

Take the D735 and the 2.9 km bridge opened in 1988, and in barely 25 minutes from La Rochelle’s Vieux-Port you’re on Île de Ré, a ribbon of marshes, low dunes and vineyards barely above sea level. First stop, Saint-Martin-de-Ré with its UNESCO-listed Vauban star-shaped fortifications (since 2008); then Ars-en-Ré, where the black-and-white steeple long served as a daymark. Thread the Loix channels, still lined with medieval-origin salt pans, before reaching the island’s northwest tip and the 1854 Baleines lighthouse, 257 steps up for a sweep of the pertuis straits.
