Harewood House

1765: the year Capability Brown traced the lakes and soft ridges that frame Harewood House, the Palladian seat of the Earls of Harewood raised between 1759 and 1771. Eleven kilometres north of Leeds, you cross Wharfedale to find Robert Adam’s state rooms, portraits by Reynolds and Gainsborough, and the long-running Bird Garden, now tied to conservation work. On the park edge, All Saints’ Church preserves re-set medieval sculpture, while inside the House the “Harewood and the Atlantic World” display addresses the estate’s wealth from sugar and the transatlantic trade head-on.

Collected from your Leeds hotel by your private chauffeur, you glide up the A61 in a Mercedes in roughly 25 minutes, with the vehicle kept at your disposal. We take our time on the State Floor, then dip into the working spaces Below Stairs. While the driving is handled, you can link the gardens, the Himalayan stupa, and a walk along the Lower Lake; if the weather turns, we simply reshuffle. On the way back, add a photo stop at Arthington Viaduct 8 km off, or pause at Harewood’s farm shop for a quick tea before returning to the city.
