At dawn on 9 April 1917, the Canadian assault on Vimy Ridge was rehearsed on full-scale relief models built in nearby camps at Souchez and Bruay — an uncommon topographic drill at the time. Between Vimy, Notre-Dame-de-Lorette and the Artois cemeteries, then onward to the Somme, the landscape still reads like a manual: preserved trench lines, tunnels cut 10–20 m down, unit plaques, and at the Ring of Remembrance, 579,606 names listed without nationality. Just 45 minutes from Lille, elevation, chalk and stone make the Great War’s contours strikingly legible.
Collected from your Lille hotel, you settle into a Mercedes while your driver handles timing, parking and the backroads, so visits and coffee breaks happen while the driving fades into the background. Close by at Vimy and Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, your dedicated chauffeur adjusts the sequence to weather and research needs, then, if you wish, continues to Thiepval and Beaumont-Hamel 60–80 km further, pacing the day with planned pauses and a smooth return by dusk.
