Follow the SP31 out of Lucca and, after 20 km of flat farmland and gentle 100–250 m slopes, the vines of Montecarlo take over—rows of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and the historic French whites introduced here in the 1800s. The 1333 fortress, Rocca del Cerruglio, still crowns the ridge, encircled by family-run estates of the Montecarlo DOC (est. 1969). Autumn brings fresh-pressed olio nuovo from nearby mills in Gragnano and Capannori, and the whites often blend Roussanne, Sauvignon and Sémillon for a distinctly northern Tuscan profile.
From there, logistics disappear: hotel pickup in Lucca, a Mercedes at your disposal, and your dedicated driver keeps the clock while you taste. We secure two estates in advance, guide you from vats to barrels, then sit down to lunch facing the rows along Via di Montecarlo, near the Oratory of San Salvatore. Time permitting, we peek at the tiny Teatro dei Rassicurati or pause on the walls for Apennine views—while you taste, he drives, and we return via the olive groves of San Salvatore.

Your chauffeur’s tip
From late September to mid-November, add a stop at the Gragnano olive mill to sample just-pressed olio nuovo and pick up a small bottle—the pairing with unsalted Tuscan bread at lunch is spot on.
