On 23 October 1165, Frederick Barbarossa arranged the canonization of Charlemagne in Aachen, fixing an imperial memory that still draws pilgrims to the Palatine Chapel begun around 800. Just 35 km from Maastricht, the octagonal dome, re-used antique marbles, and bronze doors speak of a Europe dreaming itself into empire. Few realize the cathedral still houses the stone coronation throne (936–1531) and that the gilded 1215 Shrine of Charlemagne, crafted by Rhenish goldsmiths, sits alongside Byzantine textiles in one of Germany’s richest treasuries.
