On 23 October 1165, Frederick Barbarossa arranged the canonization of Charlemagne in Aachen, fixing an imperial memory that still draws pilgrims to the Palatine Chapel begun around 800. Just 35 km from Maastricht, the octagonal dome, re-used antique marbles, and bronze doors speak of a Europe dreaming itself into empire. Few realize the cathedral still houses the stone coronation throne (936–1531) and that the gilded 1215 Shrine of Charlemagne, crafted by Rhenish goldsmiths, sits alongside Byzantine textiles in one of Germany’s richest treasuries.
Collected from your Maastricht hotel, your private chauffeur in Maastricht heads along the A2 in a Mercedes, reaching Aachen in roughly 40 minutes, traffic permitting. You visit the cathedral, the Treasury, and, if you wish, take a breather at Carolus Thermen while the driver handles parking and timing. The plan stays flexible: sample printen at Printenhaus on Krämerstraße, detour to the Centre Charlemagne on Katschhof, then return via Vaalserberg (322 m) and the Three-Country Point, with border crossings as seamless as the drive.
