Chester and its Roman walls

Two and a quarter kilometers of city walls still loop around Chester, walkable end to end since the 1200s. From the parapets you look down on Britain’s largest Roman amphitheatre, pass Phoenix and Northgate Towers, then drop into the timbered Rows where medieval traders sold from raised galleries. The former Benedictine abbey—today’s cathedral—grew between the 11th and 16th centuries and hides superb misericords and a quiet monk’s garden. Sixty‑five kilometers from Manchester, the city layers Roman Deva Victrix, a bustling medieval market town, and a Georgian hub tied to the River Dee and a racecourse dating to 1539.
