Leave the bustle of Piazza Grande behind and Pienza shifts the tempo: since 1462, Pope Pius II’s humanist plan by Bernardo Rossellino has aligned cathedral and palazzi toward a loggia framing the Monte Amiata. Just 9 miles from Montepulciano, lanes smell of ash-aged pecorino, and Via dell’Amore leads to a balustrade surveying wheat swells that roll toward the cypress clusters near San Quirico d’Orcia. A short hop further, Monticchiello keeps its medieval gate and the community-run Teatro Povero, performed every summer since 1967.
We keep it unhurried: pickup at your Montepulciano hotel, a Mercedes at your disposal, and a route tuned to light, appetite, and photos. While you taste a stagionato pecorino in a tiny shop, your dedicated driver handles the parking, then threads to the Madonna di Vitaleta chapel along a white road in about 20 minutes. Photo stops on request, unclocked visits, and a return via the Cassia if you want a different angle. Expect roughly four hours door to door, with room for crestline detours.

Your chauffeur’s tip
For raking light on the hills, start around 8:30 between mid-April and early June; in Pienza, sample a “gran riserva” pecorino at Marusco & Maria, then reach Vitaleta before 11:00 to miss the coaches.
