Loire estuary to Saint-Nazaire

Slate-gray glints on the water and a briny whiff of seaweed near Trentemoult set the scene for a day that traces the Loire to its open estuary. You’ll hop between landmark artworks from the Estuaire trail, launched in 2007 by Le Lieu Unique and Le Voyage à Nantes, from Cordemais’s Villa Cheminée to the beached Ocean Serpent at Mindin, facing Saint-Brevin. Downriver, tides shape the sandbars; farther on in Saint-Nazaire, dry docks reveal the sheer scale of cruise ships built at Chantiers de l’Atlantique, while Escal’Atlantic revives the age of ocean liners.

It’s streamlined and unhurried: hotel pick-up in Nantes, a Mercedes at your disposal, and a driver who handles stops, parking, and pacing. Heading west of the city with your dedicated chauffeur, it’s about 30 minutes to Cordemais, another 25 to Paimbœuf for a riverside coffee, then 20 to Saint-Brevin to time low tide. While you ride, you get to visit, shoot photos, and sample local oysters or an éclade if the season’s right; the afternoon unfolds in Saint-Nazaire with viewpoints over the estuary and a guided visit of Escal’Atlantic before returning late day.
