Ghemme and Gattinara, northern Nebbiolos

The first thing you catch is the clean smell of wet stone by the low gneiss walls, right where nebbiolo rows start climbing at 280–350 m on old glacial moraines. From Orta San Giulio it’s a 30–40 minute run to the hills of Ghemme and Gattinara along the Sesia, to meet two family growers who have worked Spanna for generations. Gattinara DOCG (since 1988) sits on volcanic porphyry; Ghemme (1997) on ancient sands and gravel. The result: taut tannins, tar and dried rose, and a frame that ages well past fifteen years. Less showy than Barolo, with its own mineral signature.
