In February 1894, novelist Knut Hamsun rode the railway skirting Lake Mjøsa to Lillehammer and wrote about the “bluish light” on the ice. That same corridor links Oslo to Lillehammer in about two hours, mirroring the E6 past Gjøvik and Hamar along 120 km of shoreline. Highlights line up neatly: the Lysgårdsbakken ski jump (936 steps, revamped for the 1994 Games), timber-fronted Storgata, and Maihaugen’s 200 historic buildings, including the Garmo stave church, dismantled and rebuilt here in 1921.
Pick-up from your Oslo hotel at the agreed time, then a smooth Mercedes for the day, fully at your disposal. Your private driver in Oslo sets the pace—coffee stop at Eidsvoll Verk, a quick photo from a lakeside lookout—while handling parking as you explore Maihaugen or climb to the ski jump viewpoint. Between stops, sample brunost or a warm skillingsbolle as the driving is taken care of. The return often loops via Hamar to glimpse the Mjøsa Tower (2019) before reaching Oslo by late afternoon.
