Beyond that point, cars are out: the five cliffside villages sit between sea level and 400 m and are reached by regional trains (8–12 minutes between stops) or by boat when the swell is kind. Vernazza brings the Doria tower and wave-battered breakwater; Manarola opens its terraced Sciacchetrà vines; Monterosso stretches Fegina beach beneath the 1910 concrete Neptune.

Your chauffeur’s tip
In summer, the first boat to Vernazza from Molo Italia (around 9:45) is quieter; sit starboard leaving La Spezia for telephoto shots of Manarola’s headland. If swell exceeds 1 m, secure a Cinque Terre Treno the day before.
