Leaving Pisa, the SS1 Aurelia tracks west for 79 km to La Spezia in roughly 70 minutes, skirting limestone knolls near San Giuliano and the wooded folds of Lunigiana. Beyond that point, cars are out: the five cliffside villages sit between sea level and 400 m and are reached by regional trains (8–12 minutes between stops) or by boat when the swell is kind. Vernazza brings the Doria tower and wave-battered breakwater; Manarola opens its terraced Sciacchetrà vines; Monterosso stretches Fegina beach beneath the 1910 concrete Neptune.
The flow is effortless: hotel pickup in Pisa, a cooled Mercedes at your disposal, and a driver who times your day to boat sailings or train headways. In La Spezia, they steer you to either the Consorzio battello at Molo Italia or a Cinque Terre Treno pass, and sort tickets while you grab warm focaccia or plot the climb to the sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Montenero. Having a private driver for Liguria also means a guaranteed ride back in the evening, even if seas turn rough and rail becomes the smarter call.

Your chauffeur’s tip
In summer, the first boat to Vernazza from Molo Italia (around 9:45) is quieter; sit starboard leaving La Spezia for telephoto shots of Manarola’s headland. If swell exceeds 1 m, secure a Cinque Terre Treno the day before.
