Saint-Savin abbey

From Poitiers’ bustle to the hush of stone at Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe: in under an hour you trade the Marché Notre-Dame for Romanesque naves where 11th–12th‑century frescoes unfurl Noah, Moses and the Apocalypse across more than 400 sq m. Listed by UNESCO since 1983, the abbey still keeps its original plaster, a gallery and a porch-tower, set in soft river curves and meadows. En route, a detour to the Gallo-Roman sanctuary of Sanxay or to Chauvigny’s five castles adds layers to Poitou’s long timeline.

The plan stays flexible: hotel pickup in Poitiers, dedicated chauffeur in a late‑model Mercedes, vehicle at your disposal all day. He drives; you watch and taste. On arrival, take the guided tour of the church and interpretation spaces, then cross to nearby Saint‑Germain church to contrast painted cycles. Break for lunch in Montmorillon, the “City of Writing,” about 25 km away, or choose a riverside inn. On the way back, pause at Antigny or the Roc d’Enfer viewpoint, and, time permitting, the mills around Voulon before drop‑off wherever you wish.
