Some 28 km southwest of the Capitoline Hill, the SR8 Via del Mare and the SP8 skim flat coastal plains and stone pines to reach Ostia Antica along the fossil bed of the Tiber. Basalt paving leads to Augustus’ theatre (12 BC), the Baths of Neptune, and the Piazzale delle Corporazioni, where black-and-white mosaics once advertised shipowners from Alexandria and Carthage. Beyond the Porta Marina the dunes begin; from the Caserma dei Vigili to the insulae on Via di Diana, Rome’s port city plan comes into focus without forum crowds. Ideal before Fiumicino, a mere 9 km away.

Your chauffeur’s tip
