Between the stern outline of the old colegios and the honeyed glow of Villamayor sandstone, Salamanca shifts with the light. Its 1529 Plateresque university façade still reads like a code, frog on a skull included. Two cathedrals overlap here: the Old (12th–13th century) with the torre del Gallo, and the New, a late Gothic-to-baroque giant finished in 1733. Casa de las Conchas strings more than 300 shells along its walls, while the Roman bridge spans 176 meters, linking legend to the Tormes’ steady flow.
The day moves at your pace: hotel pickup, a comfortable Mercedes on standby, flexible timing, and seamless drop-offs right at each doorway. With a private chauffeur in Salamanca, you wander the Plaza Mayor’s arcades or climb the Clerecía tower (Scala Coeli) to about 60 meters while your driver waits. Between stops, try hornazo or a glass from Ribera del Duero; and if you’re coming from Madrid, figure roughly 2 h 30 for the 215 km via the A-50.
