Vernaccia and saffron, flavours of the town

Step away from the bustle of Piazza del Duomo and, a short stroll later, the towers cast long stripes across vineyards of Vernaccia first recorded here in the 1200s. San Gimignano’s fame rests as much on stone as on the glass: Tuscany’s only white DOCG, brisk and saline, calls this ridge home. Two benchmark cellars off Via San Giovanni — Montenidoli to the south and Panizzi toward Ulignano — tell the same Pliocene sand story in different accents. Out by Pancole, saffron fields flash purple in October, a craft documented in the town statutes as early as 1228.
