In May 1642, Parliamentarian troops raised a timber siege tower outside Warwick’s walls, an ominous rehearsal for the English Civil War that followed. Within these fortifications, first ordered by William the Conqueror around 1068, eight centuries unfold: an Anglo-Norman mound and keep, a Victorian Great Hall, and reconstructed engines of war. Just 8 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon, the route also threads to Kenilworth, its red-sandstone ruins still echoing Robert Dudley’s lavish 1575 entertainments for Elizabeth I.
