Back in 1669, a lava flow from the Monti Rossi vents marched for 65 days and reshaped Catania’s shoreline by almost a kilometer. Today, vines of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio cling to those same lava terraces between 600 and 1,000 meters, across named plots like Feudo di Mezzo and Solicchiata. About 55 km from Taormina, the road climbs past the 1892 Silvestri craters and skirts the 2001–02 flows; altitude, wind and old dry‑stone walls all leave a salty, smoky signature in the glass.
