In 1895, archaeologist Édouard Marius Harlé reported the first Paleolithic paintings in Ardèche, a quiet prelude to the 1994 discovery of the Chauvet Cave, dated to around 36,000 years. Between Vallon-Pont-d’Arc and Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, the D290 scenic road snakes above a canyon 250–300 m deep. The Pont d’Arc, a 54 m natural arch, signals the gateway to the gorge. Up on the plateau, the Forestière dolmens and the Combe d’Arc tell a megalithic chapter, while limestone cliffs riddled with pits host raptors and spring orchids.
Your driver collects you in Valence, then heads via the A7 and D86 in roughly 1 h 40. The vehicle is at your disposal: coffee in Bourg-Saint-Andéol, photos from the Serre de Tourre viewpoint, a stroll under the Pont d’Arc while he handles parking. In the afternoon, pre-booked entry to Chauvet 2, followed by a stop with a picodon goat-cheese producer in Lagorce. With a private chauffeur in Ardèche, you focus on scenery and stories as he adjusts timings, manages the logistics, and brings you back unhurried.

Your chauffeur’s tip
For softer light and fewer crowds at the Pont d’Arc, plan to arrive before 11:00 from mid-May to late June; book Chauvet 2 at least 72 hours ahead, early afternoon slots tend to flow better.
