Down in the narrow gorge the road clings to the rock; up on the crest, the Mauvoisin arch dam stretches above a turquoise reservoir at 1,961 m. Commissioned in 1958, this 250 m structure holds back waters from the Giétro and Brenay glaciers, with inspection galleries carved into the cliff and, beyond, summer pastures where AOP raclette is matured. It’s a 25 km climb from Verbier via Fionnay, hairpins and short tunnels added after 19th‑century floods.
This half‑day keeps you looking out the window while your driver handles the bends. Hotel pickup in Verbier, a quiet Mercedes on standby, photo stops whenever the light turns alpine‑blue, and time to linger in a village dairy. With a private chauffeur in Verbier you reach the dam crest, stroll to the Tzèntzettaz waterfall, then sample raclette or sérac in Lourtier or Le Châble before an unhurried ride back—tight road, tunnels, timing all taken care of.
