Nice, old town and museums

Leaving Villefranche-sur-Mer, it’s 6.8 km to Nice via the Basse Corniche (M6098), a balcony road skirting the bay and the Castle Hill before dropping into the Old Town. The street grid, shaped under the House of Savoy, fans out from the Cours Saleya—opened to the sea in 1861—toward Sainte-Réparate Cathedral. Two and a half kilometers uphill, Cimiez brings olive groves, a Roman arena, and two anchors of culture: the Matisse Museum in the Villa des Arènes, and the Chagall Museum, purpose-built in 1973 by architect André Hermant.
