Krimml waterfalls

Down by the still surface of Lake Zell, then up where the Salzach valley starts to roar. Head 55 km west from Zell am See to the Krimmler Ache, dropping 380 m in three tiers along a panoramic trail first laid out in 1904 and still maintained by the Austrian Alpine Club. Waypoints such as Wasserfallblick and Kürsingerplatz mix spray and viewpoints, and on clear days you can glimpse the Krimmler Kees glacier cirque. On the way back, two smart detours beckon: Kaprun’s hydroelectric dams, a 1950s engineering landmark 20 km away, or the limestone Kitzloch Gorge near Taxenbach.
