A whiff of laricio pine rides the cool air as the road climbs into the Alta Rocca between Levie and Zonza. Blond granite villages once tied to transhumant herders appear, then the jagged spires of the Bavella Needles (1,218 m) ruling over passes and protected forests. Roughly 1h30 from Ajaccio via the D420 and N196, this highland side of Corsica reveals chestnut groves, Genoese bridges on the Rizzanese, and small Romanesque chapels. In winter a dusting of snow can touch the pass; in summer, strawberry tree and maquis scent the bends.
Your day unfolds in a roomy Mercedes with the driver on hand: hotel pick-up in Ajaccio, flexible photo stops, tastings, and short walks while he handles the winding roads and parking. Between Petreto-Bicchisano and Quenza you sample Alta Rocca charcuterie and Corsican honey, then continue through Zonza to the Bavella Pass at 1,214 m. If timing suits, a coffee stop in Propriano on the way back. In and around Ajaccio, your private driver times the route to avoid buses and tweaks the plan to match mountain weather.
