Bristol and the Clifton Suspension Bridge

From stately Georgian stone to working docks, the shift is immediate: leave Bath via the A4 and, in under half an hour, Bristol rises over the Avon, its hills crowned by Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge (opened 1864) and a Floating Harbour engineered in 1809. Banksy still haunts walls near Park Street and Stokes Croft, the SS Great Britain rests on Spike Island, and the Clifton Observatory frames the tidal river cutting through the gorge. At dusk the steel deck glows, a maritime light edging in from the Severn.

Forget maps and meters: collected at your Bath hotel, you travel to Bristol with a dedicated chauffeur in a Mercedes, at your disposal for the day or the evening. Drop-off at the SS Great Britain, unhurried time to explore, then up to Clifton Village for the bridge and viewpoint, before coasting back to the Harbourside for dinner on the quays.
