On the night of 13 August 1961, East German forces uncoiled roughly 30 kilometers of barbed wire, and by 15 August concrete slabs appeared along Bernauer Strasse. That split-second border explains why stairwells once opened onto West Berlin and why metal studs in the pavement still trace the Wall within sight of the Spree. Between the East Side Gallery and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, this half-day strings together places where VOPO signs and sector markers compress 1945–1990 into readable streets.
