Spreewald canals and Sorbian villages

475 square kilometers of protected wetlands and some 1,500 kilometers of tree-lined channels: the Spreewald, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1991, lies roughly 100 km southeast of Berlin. Flat-bottomed punts slip out of Lübbenau toward Lehde, a Sorbian hamlet reached by water, where timber barns, low wooden houses, and storehouses on stilts recall a river-bound way of life. Cucumber fields here became famous pickles in the 19th century, and bilingual Sorbian-German signs still mark the lanes. Alders, mills, and the braided Spree set the tone—quietly industrious, deeply shaped by flood meadows.

Pick-up from your Berlin hotel around 8:30, in a recent Mercedes with child seats on request, and a bilingual driver who handles timing and parking. While you cruise from Lübbenau, tour the open-air museum in Lehde, and sample Spreewald gherkins at Spreewaldhof, your driver keeps the day flexible and smooth. Expect about 1 hr 20 mins each way; we can loop back via Lübben for coffee on the market square and, conditions permitting, pause for a photo by the Wotschofska footbridge on the return.
