Trading Bern’s bustle for lake-side calm, the shift happens as soon as you follow the Aare upstream: Interlaken stretches across the narrow strip between Lakes Thun and Brienz, beneath the Harder Kulm ridge (1,321 m). Paddle steamers, the medieval castles of Spiez and Oberhofen, and the tiered Giessbach Falls map a landscape shaped by water and stone. Note the colors: deep blue on Thun; milky turquoise on Brienz, clouded by glacial silt carried by the Giessbach and the Lütschine.
