Wadden Sea and seal safari

Back in 1927, Danish naturalists were already logging “tidal flat outings” on Fanø to tally harbor seals, decades before full protection arrived in 1977 and long before UNESCO listing. Tides here lay bare vast mudflats off Esbjerg and Fanø, sliced by channels toward Keldsand and Langjord sandbanks. In autumn, Sort Sol—the famed starling murmurations above the Ribe Å reedbeds—often peaks around late afternoon. With waterproof boots, you’ll reach low-tide seal haul-outs 2–3 km offshore and read the landscape like a living chart of currents and sand.

Your day starts at your hotel in Billund, then an unhurried run to Esbjerg—about 70 km—while your driver handles timing and parking. A 12-minute ferry jumps you to Fanø for a guided low-tide walk, the car on standby for warm layers and snacks. Later, a quick stop in Nordby for smørrebrød, then onward to the Ribe marshes for the evening murmurations. Having a private driver who knows the Wadden Sea means syncing to tide tables, securing boots ahead of time, and getting to the best seal vantage points without the clock ever feeling tight.
