On 29 May 1914, wireless tests by Marconi linked South Foreland’s lighthouse to the SS Mona’s Isle just off these chalk ramparts, a quiet milestone in radio at the very edge of England. The White Cliffs rise to roughly 110 m and run for about 13 km; on clear days the Boulonnais hills line the horizon. Above them sits Dover Castle, strengthened by Henry II around 1180, its wartime tunnels later expanded in 1940 for Operation Dynamo. The Roman lighthouse stands beside St Mary-in-Castro’s tower, with the Channel below recalling an age-old front line.
Your driver collects you in Canterbury and heads 30 km south-east in a Mercedes, while you relax and watch the downs give way to sea. First stop: the National Trust Visitor Centre for an easy walk along Langdon Cliffs, photo breaks built in while the car waits. Then it’s over to the castle for pre-booked entry, ramparts and the wartime tunnels. Pause for tea at the Naafi Restaurant; your chauffeur fine-tunes timings to match the weather and those coveted glimpses of the French coast.
