The cathedral and medieval Canterbury

Skirting the hop fields and apple orchards of Kent, the A2 runs 30 km from Dover to the Stour Valley, where Canterbury’s spires rise above timbered lanes. Established in 597 by Augustine and rebuilt after the 1174 fire, the cathedral layers a Romanesque crypt under a soaring Gothic choir; the site of Thomas Becket’s 1170 martyrdom is still marked. Step from the cloister to the precincts of King’s School, then out to the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey and on to Westgate, the last of the city’s medieval gates.

This half-day is fluid by design: collected from your London hotel, you’re set down by Burgate at the edge of the pedestrian core, while your driver keeps the Mercedes close and the clock off. You tour the cathedral and cloister, cross to King’s School yards, and continue to St Augustine’s and Westgate; if you fancy a pause, there’s tea on Sun Street or a Kentish ale at The Foundry while the car waits.
