Back in 1879, Italian ampelographer Giuseppe di Rovasenda wrote of Etna’s “black wines” from nerello mascalese, grown on dry‑stone terraces tied to historic palmento presses. On the north slope between Randazzo and Solicchiata, vineyards sit from 600 to 1,000 meters across old lava flows (notably 1614–1624). Scoriaceous soils, cool drafts, slow ripening: the balance is scientific, not a slogan. Basalt palmenti, a secco walls, and pockets of pre‑phylloxera vines in Passopisciaro turn the hillside into a living archive you can read parcel by parcel.
Your driver collects you in Catania, heads up the SP59, and in about one hour you’re tasting across Feudo di Mezzo and Rampante. The car stays at your disposal: cellar walk‑throughs, a working palmento, guided tastings at two estates, then lunch facing the volcano in Solicchiata. You sip while he drives, with timing flexed for weather or a gate opening to a special plot. On the way back, a quick photo stop at the 1981 flow above Linguaglossa if the light turns golden.
