In 413 BC, Athens’ Sicilian expedition collapsed before the walls of Syracuse—a defeat Thucydides called one of antiquity’s great reversals. The limestone Greek Theatre, enlarged under Hieron II in the 3rd century BC, still hosts spring performances. Nearby, the stone quarries known as the Latomies hide the “Ear of Dionysius,” a cavern Caravaggio famously named in 1608 for its startling acoustics. Then comes Ortigia: Doric columns embedded in the cathedral’s walls and the freshwater Arethusa spring right on the seafront.
Your day runs on your clock: hotel pickup in Catania, a smooth hop down the E45 (about 65 km), Mercedes on standby, and flexible returns. While your driver handles the road to the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, you set the pace, then cross to Ortigia for a market lunch on Via Benedictis, an espresso at Caffè Minerva, and a stroll along the Lungomare. In Catania, our private chauffeur anticipates light-traffic windows, pre-books Ortigia’s ZTL access, drops you steps from each site, and waits while you explore.
