Stirling Castle and the Kelpies

Warm gritstone under a low sun, and the wind fussing through elms on the plateau: Stirling Castle stands on its basalt crag, 75 meters above the Forth valley. Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned here in 1543, and from the ramparts you can still read the lie of Bannockburn, 3 km to the south, where Bruce won in 1314. On the way from Edinburgh, the National Wallace Monument (1869) needles up from Abbey Craig, before the return swing to Falkirk where Andy Scott’s 30‑meter Kelpies recall the horsepower that once hauled Scotland’s canals.

From there, it’s all easy: hotel pick‑up in Edinburgh, a Mercedes at your disposal, and timing tuned to weather and crowds. Your dedicated driver handles the M9 run, drops you at the esplanade, waits while you explore the Royal Palace and Great Hall, then heads to Helix Park for a close look at the Kelpies.
