Early light slips through cork oaks and dampens your shoes as you step into Almendres Cromlech. Ninety-five standing stones—some etched with cup-marks and solar lines—form an oval sightline toward the Serra d’Ossa. Just 4 km away, Anta Grande do Zambujeiro, excavated in the 1960s, rises with orthostats over 6 meters high. These megaliths don’t stand alone: barrows, rocking menhirs, and polishing stations pepper the Alentejo plains within a 20-minute drive of Évora, between vineyards and montado.
Your driver collects you at the hotel in Évora and heads west to Guadalupe, then on to Valverde—Mercedes V or E-Class, chilled water on board. You wander; he waits, and rolls onward while you discuss equinox alignments and prehistoric routes. Timing stays flexible: about 25 minutes at Almendres, 30 at Zambujeiro, a photo stop at the Menhir dos Almendres, and, if you wish, a quick coffee at Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe. Return via the N114, roughly 14 km to Évora’s walls.
