Back in 1167, Geraldo the Fearless seized Monsaraz for Afonso Henriques, and the watchtowers still read the Guadiana valley like a ledger. From the crenellations you see Lake Alqueva, filled in 2002, and the old ophite quarry below; five kilometers away, the Xerez stone circle points to a Neolithic thread, and the Alqueva Starlight Reserve keeps the sky dark. Lunch comes with Spain on the horizon, roughly 15 km away, and with it a clear view of how the reservoir redrew roads, trades, and even the local wind.
Your driver collects you from your Évora hotel and keeps the Mercedes on standby all day: 55 km via the N256, about 50 minutes at an easy pace. In Monsaraz, you wander while they handle parking, then continue via Reguengos de Monsaraz to taste at Herdade do Esporão and pause at the dam viewpoint. With a private chauffeur based in Évora, you can add nimble stops—dolmens and the potters’ workshops of São Pedro do Corval—while they manage access. The return at dusk skirts the lake, with a final star stop at the Cumeada observatory.
