At 556 meters, the Totenkopf crowns the Kaiserstuhl, a mellow volcanic massif blanketed in loess and tight vine terraces of Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, and Muskateller. Between Ihringen and Vogtsburg, south‑facing slopes soak up one of Germany’s warmest microclimates; dry‑stone walls speed up drainage after summer storms. On clear days the Vosges line the western horizon across the Rhine. Some estates still work 1930s cellars, others age in acacia or ceramic. Waymarked vineyard paths skim old strombolian cones and neat geological cuttings.
Collected from your Freiburg hotel, you travel with a dedicated driver who knows the terrace lanes and timing tricks: a Mercedes at your disposal, stops flexed to taste or linger. It’s a 20–25 minute run to Ihringen for the first flight, then to fortified Burkheim and, if light cooperates, the Totenkopf lookout. While you sip, he handles parking and tasting bookings; you wander, he drives. The return can loop via Sasbach or Oberrotweil, with a quick Strauße stop when doors are open.
