On 13 October 1917, in driving rain, more than 50,000 witnesses reported the “Miracle of the Sun” at Fátima, setting the stage for one of Europe’s major pilgrimage sites, 130 km from Lisbon. Northward lies Batalha Monastery, begun in 1386 to mark the Battle of Aljubarrota, its Unfinished Chapels a study in late Gothic ambition. Alcobaça, granted to the Cistercians in 1153, shelters the facing tombs of Pedro and Inês. On the way back, walled Óbidos—its circuit largely 12th‑century—threads white lanes and pours ginjinha in a chocolate cup.
Your day starts at your Lisbon hotel, with a dedicated chauffeur and Mercedes at your disposal. First stop: Fátima (about 1 h 30) for the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Chapel of the Apparitions; then on to Batalha (25 km) and Alcobaça (35 km) at your pace—while you tour and taste, he drives. The return can route via Óbidos (40 km from Alcobaça) for a short walk along the walls before a late‑afternoon drop‑off. In Lisbon, your private driver knows the A8 timing to skirt traffic.
