On 26 June 1901, engineer William Gowland carried out the first documented restoration at Stonehenge, jacking up a leaning trilithon and setting it in concrete—a prelude to William Hawley’s 1919 excavations. Set on chalk downs 136 km from London, the monument functions as a prehistoric calendar aligned to the solstice. Then it’s on to Bath, 55 km away, where hot spring water rises at 46°C and shaped a city of ritual and geometry: the Roman Baths, John Wood the Younger’s Royal Crescent, the Pump Room, and the Abbey.
Collected from your London hotel, you ride while your driver handles the roads. A Mercedes at your disposal means smooth transfers and flexible stops if the weather shifts or the light turns golden. Timed entry at Stonehenge is pre-booked; in Bath, a lunch table awaits before you wander to Pulteney Bridge or the Guildhall’s Victorian reading room. With a dedicated chauffeur managing waits and drop-offs, you get to taste a Sally Lunn bun and still make time to study Bath stone façades—without clock-watching.
