At 9 am the Guadarrama range is already etched in the side mirror as we roll out of Madrid on the A‑6. Barely 35 minutes later, the slate domes and granite grid of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial appear, a complex the size of a small town. Step through the Courtyard of the Kings, hear the twin organs in the basilica, then descend to the Pantheon of the Kings where Habsburgs and Bourbons lie. In the library commissioned by Philip II, celestial globes and painted bindings date to the 1500s. Nine kilometers away, the Mirador over the Cuelgamuros valley frames the vast granite cross and the pine forest.
From there, logistics fade into the background: your driver collects you at your Madrid hotel in a Mercedes, the plan set yet flexible. You tour and sip coffee under San Lorenzo’s arcades while the driver handles tickets, timing, and even a detour to Ávila (65 km) to see its 11th‑century walls if you wish. With a dedicated private chauffeur in Madrid, the mountain roads are effortless, freeing time for the Hall of Battles, the crypts, and a photo stop at Puerto de Abantos.
