Rolling out from the Castilian plateau, 72 km due south of Madrid on the A-42, Toledo rises above the Tagus on a granite spur at roughly 530 m. Once the capital of Castile until 1561, its medieval street plan still braids Christian, Jewish and Muslim legacies: Mudéjar ribs, sober azulejo, and shaded patios. The Primatial Cathedral, begun in 1226, faces the Synagogue of El Tránsito, while Santo Tomé guards El Greco’s Burial of the Count of Orgaz, painted here around 1586.
Your driver meets you at the hotel in Madrid—Mercedes at disposal, chilled water, and a flexible route. You rest, skim a page on Alfonso X, then visit and taste while he handles the driving between stops. In Toledo, he manages tight medieval access and drops you by Zocodover or Cambrón depending on crowds; he waits through the cathedral sacristy, times a detour to Mirador del Valle, and slots in a mazapán stop at Santo Tomé before heading back via the CM-40 if traffic calls for it.
